Laser Technology Research Institute (LTRI)

of the National Technical University of Ukraine “KPI”

Research in the field of laser technology is carried out since 1964. Based on this research Laser Technology Lab (LTL) was created (1968), Laser Technology and Material Science Department (LTMSD) was organized (1990) and the Laser Technology Research Institute (LTRI) was opened (1993).

The experimental facilities include:

      Several universal setups based on YAG lasers with option of oscillators with different laser power, developed at LTRI:

    Industrial system based on 1.5 kW CO2 laser;

    Industrial system based on 2.5 kW CO2 laser;

    Industrial systems based on universal standard equipment like SLS-10-1, Quant-16,  Quant-17, Quant-50 etc.

    Different types of robotized laser industrial systems, developed at LTRI;

    Unique and first in Ukraine universal system for 3D objects Rapid Prototyping from metal and ceramic materials;

      EDM, ECM, USM standard setups and other auxiliary equipment.

The research are performed in different areas:

-         piercing of precise holes;

-         sheet material shearing and cutting micro slots;

-         hardening, local alloying and cladding;

-         rapid prototyping;

-         marking and engraving;

-         laser technology diagnostic systems development;

-         laser micro welding,

-         hybrid laser technology development;

-         laser surface cleaning;

-         laser system development for medical and biological applications;

-         simulation (modeling) of different laser machining processes;

-         development of other nontraditional methods of material machining.

Consulting, laser processing and equipment developments as well as special equipment usage are proposed. Educational program in laser technology and other non conventional machining methods are developed (Bachelor, Specialist, Master levels). Applicants are invited (more than 800 graduates from Ukraine and other 32 different countries got the corresponding degree up to now).  Scientific degrees may be earned in this field as well (Ph D-Candidate of technical sciences and Doctor of  technical sciences). 27 Ph D thesis and 6 Doctors of Technical Science thesis had been successfully defended in the field of laser technology. There is fruitful collaboration in research and academic activities with different Laser research centers and Universities in Europe, USA, Canada, Japan and other countries.

Number of publications: 33 books, published in Ukraine, Russia, Bulgaria, USA, China; 150 patents, 500 scientific papers.

Research staff includes 4 Professors, 9 Dr., 8 engineers and a number of postgraduate students.
